Ruidoso Facts

The Village of Ruidoso, named for the Ruidoso ("Noisy") River, is the fastest-growing resort town in the southwest. Surrounded by the Sacramento, Capitan, and Jicarilla Mountains, it is at the lush, green center of southern New Mexico's highlands.

The Ruidoso area was initially settled by the Mescalero Apache Indians, who hunted and fished the area for centuries before colonial Spanish troops invaded the Rio Bravo Valley in the 1500s. The 1800s saw the arrival of mountain trappers, who were followed by the traders and merchants who formed the settlement which eventually became Ruidoso. Some of its legendary inhabitants in the late ninteenth century, including Billy The Kid, gave Ruidoso a wild and independent western reputation.

But the beginning of the twentieth century, saw Ruidoso become more noted for its relaxed atmosphere and outdoor activities. It was a fun but slightly rowdy recreational refuge for heat-weary denizens from southern New Mexico and West Texas. Being a part of what is now the Lincoln National Forest, and having refreshingly cool and mild weather for the desert southwest, Ruidoso offers a variety of outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, and fishing.

Ruidoso Downs, a world famous horse racing venue, was built shortly after World War II, further establishing the village as a summer resort destination.

Towering above the village is Sierra Blanca, an often white-capped and always beautiful 12,000-foot peak. When the Sierra Blanca Ski area (now called "Ski Apache") was opened in 1962, Ruidoso became a year-round resort. The recent development of the Spencer Theater and the Museum of the American Horse fit solidly in with the area's growing reputation as a cultural destination. The Ruidoso area is home to many fine museums and artists. And with three country clubs and a public course available, even golfers can find pleasant challenges here.

Beautiful mountains, green pines, and hospitable residents promise increased popularity for the Village as one of the region's best family-friendly resort towns.

Ruidoso is a town with just a few thousand permanent residents. Sudderth Drive, the main street, is lined with enough shops, galleries and restaurants to keep lots of visitors busy. While Santa Fe may be the more widely known New Mexico resort town, Ruidoso can easily claim to be its best challenger -- and it's less crowded, less expensive, and definitely less pretentious.
